Tips for you online admission interview

In order to be able to complete the degree programme of your choice at the FH Upper Austria, you can complete parts of the admission procedure online due to the COVID-19 measures – as far as this is technically possible. To make sure that you are well prepared for your online admission interview and that we can get to know you personally and authentically, you will find helpful tips and tricks on this topic in the FAQs for prospective students/applicants.

The conversation will take place in your familiar surroundings and atmosphere – which means you will probably feel more secure and confident. A detailed preparation of the content is a prerequisite, but many other, especially technical, aspects have to be considered in an online interview.

Which technical preparations have to be made on the PC?

For the online admission interview, you should ensure a pleasant discussion atmosphere and avoid possible (technical) pitfalls.

  • The intake interview is conducted either with the online conference tool MS Teams or Skype.
  • You will receive detailed information and your appointment in advance by e-mail from the respective degree programme of the FH Upper Austria.
  • Depending on which tool you need, install Skype or MS Teams in advance. You will find more information in the next question.
  • It is important that you have a working and high-quality camera and good sound quality. The picture should be sharp and not pixelated and your conversation should take place at eye level. Therefore, please make sure you have the right camera position.
  • Test beforehand whether you can ensure better sound quality via the hands-free system of your PC or a headset. If the picture and acoustics are perfect, you will create the basis for a pleasant atmosphere for all parties involved.

Further precautions to be taken:

  • Keep order in the background. Because everything that is visible will be noticed by the person you are talking to. Test in advance what is within the camera’s field of view and create structures at your workplace.
  • Take care of camera settings so that the background is ideally neutral and free of disturbing elements.
  • Ask yourself the questions: Does everything look professional and neutral? Are there any disturbing elements? And if so, what are they? Can these be removed?
  • First impressions count in online job interviews as well. Therefore, make sure you look well-groomed and handle it as if you were appearing in person on site (clothing, hairstyle, etc.).
  • Suitable lighting must also be provided in preparation for the online interview. For this, set the light from the front and something from below. You should definitely avoid:
    • Lighting from behind (you are hardly visible for your virtual counterpart),
    • Lighting from above (creates unsightly shadows on the face),
    • Lighting completely from the side (lighting is to thetrical),
    • Illumination is too weak (do not dim the light),
  • It is important that your conversation can run smoothly. Therefore, please ensure that you are undisturbed and that no outside noise can have a negative impact on the call quality.
  • In case of any technical problems you should always have your smartphone at hand.
  • In preparation for the online interview you can rehearse the interview and see how you look during the interview. You can also rehearse the conversation with family and friends. Also note the following: Is the interview tool working properly? Is the Internet connection stable? What about your picture and voice quality and that of your „test interviewer“? He/she can give you direct feedback.
